...the mouths of babes!

Lincoln has baffled us by choosing to speak, after 28 months of nothing but our names, star, and moon.  Here are some of my favorites from his grinning little face:

"Rockabye baby in the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock" (I kid you not - from no words to this! He loves songs!)

"Kraut" (he loves saurkraut)
"Beet Kuh Vahs" (he loves beet kvass too)
"Baff" (bath)
"JayJay ant RaeRae" (J and R's names)
"Moo meat pleasssse" (More meat please)
"Read uh book?" (My fave!)
"Dom nose?"  (Dominoes)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adam (4yo): "They're gonna make a baby!  They're gonna make a baby!"
(He loves the making of the baby 'robot' put together by parts from box in the movie "Robots")

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
But here's the MacDaddy of the week that I must journal for her sake when she calls me about her mischievous children:
Reagan was caught in the nursery of the church we visited last weekend, stealing mini animal crackers.  These are NOT allowed on our food plan and she also taught Adam how to steal in the process.  She was reprimanded and seemed to take her punishment rather well.  When we returned home, she quickly ran for the bathroom and insisted that she didn't need any help with her long dress.  She was impatient with how long it was taking me to wash my hands and leave so I was thusly clued into some form of deceit.  Her usual m.o. is to try oi hide an 'accident' so I asked to see her underwear (which she was trying to hide from me as she sat).
And low and behold - what do I find?  Not wet underwear but a large handful of mini-animal crackersIN her underwear!!!  Stashed away from the church nursery since she didn't have any pockets (and clearly we are starving her in our disallowing of such tempting treats).  I literally had to duck my head out of the door so she wouldn't see  me choke down a laugh as I called dh to come witness the scene.

Have mercy - I don't know if I will survive this child!  Goodness gracious and deary me oh my!

...the mouths of babes!

I've been so long in putting together a Tiny Talk Tuesday post - just keep forgetting to write down the funny things these kiddos say!

We were giving the kids a taste of the new lacto-fermented salsa that will be a daily part of their new diet. It tastes like fresh salsa except that it has a certain something that fills your sinuses.
Rae (6): Man, this stuff is zingy! (Her word for anything spicey or vinegary)
Jefferson (8): It's not a zing - it's a BANG! (As he struggles for breathe and chokes it down)

Strangely enough, both Adam (4) & Lincoln (2) liked that 'bang' enough to eat more!
---------------------------------------------------------------
Adam is doing wonderfully in his speech therapy!  He is 4 now but just 2 years ago he couldn't even say 'mommy.'  Here are some of his favorite words that I love:

"lasterday" (yesterday)
"helipockter" (helicopter)
"I dough know!" (I don't know)
"One, two, three, FIVE!"
"Bummy tumps!" (He love the 'tummy bumps' in the road!)
"Did you buy 'at one?" (He asks me this about EVERY item in the house multiple times each day- for some reason he wants to know if I bought 'that one' from the store)

--------------------------------------------------------------
I was telling Jefferson (8yo) once again that he is just growing so fast I can hardly believe it:

Me: It's like you're growing taller every day!
Jefferson: Yeah... you know I DO grow like a germ taller everyday.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Two quotes from our "How to open a fresh coconut" adventure:

Adam: I want to see the eyeballs - let me see the eyeballs!! (wanting to see the coconut 'eyes')

DH: Look kids - we're milkin' a coconut!

...the mouths of babes!

I was torturing Reagan by brushing her knotty hair this morning. I was amazed at how awful it was and she was brought to tears by the pain.

Reagan (6): If my hair is dead, then why does it hurt so much Mommy?!

(Nice to know that she's listened in science - human body discussions last year. Poor girl - I had to tell her that the skin part, where the hair's attached it still quite alive and full of nerves!)

--------------------------------------------
And this week it was my dh that had me laughing!

Yesterday, I was lamenting and complaining to dh about how much time it takes just to do daily tasks for the kids, such as feeding and dressing and diapers. I was just looking for some empathy from dh more than complaining really because I was tired and facing dinner unprepared again. I said, "It never ending with these kids."

DH: Well, there're just so many of them!

(It just sounded so funny coming out of his mouth so bluntly - as if we have 10 children running amuck or something!)

...the mouths of babes!

The kids are cracking me up as usual with their simple, literal, and innocent observations.
Jefferson (7.5): What do they call that thing we ate if it's just a big chunk of cookie shaped like a triangle?
Me: A scone, honey.
Jefferson: But it's like a cookie?
Me: Yes, but they call it a scone....

(He's right though - the ones from Walmart are a sweet and textured just like a cookie. I hadn't thought that the kids would like them. Still don't think he remembers the word 'scone' since he asks for a the 'triangle cookie'!)
---------------------------------------------
Jefferson (while really enjoying his dinner): I could eat this meat 24/7!

(Don't think he knows what that means - just that he's heard it somewhere before)
--------------------------------------------

Reagan (6) (While coloring in a tomato for her garden book): I'm making the back darker so it's looks like a shadow!
Me:What do you mean? What made you know to do that? (Surprised at her understanding of coloring shadows to make something appear more 3-D)
Reagan: I saw them do it on Bob the Tomato. You know - the part at the end where they showed us how to draw Larry?

(Apparently the special features to a Veggie movie has instructions on drawing the characters. She must have been intrigued by this enough to remember how to shade her tomato! Her memory always surprises me!)
--------------------------------------------

Jefferson: How do you like my pot, Mommy? (As he shoves a sand bucket full of super packed dirt into my face)
Me: Uh... what do you mean?
Jefferson: I planted a seed! Do you think it will be ok? Will it grow?

(I love his enthusiasm and his belief that any seed put in soil WILL grow!)
--------------------------------------------
Reagan (while observing closely the new growth on our Wandering Jew & with utter amazement): It looks just like God put glitter in the leaves, Mommy!
Jefferson: Yeah! And they're hairy too!

...the mouths of babes!

Thought I might ease myself back into posting with a simple post and hopefully this will lead to more posts. I love the way that the kids describe things around here - it's always unique and often quite amusing!

Adam (3): Ah want see Jesus??
Reagan (5.5): No Adam. You can't see Jesus. Only when you get to be 4 or 5 and then you can pray for Jesus to be in your heart and then He can help you to be like Him and you can see Him in heaven. But you can't get to heaven on a bicycle!

(Well - that does it for me! I guess I'll have to try the praying thing instead of my bike....)
------------------------------------------
Me: Can you use descriptive words to tell Mommy what her voice sounds like? Something different than 'loud' or 'soft'?
Jefferson (7): THUNDER!

(Yikes - now I know what my yelling sounds like to little ears!)
-----------------------------------------
Me: You have a GREAT memory, Reagan!
Reagan (5.5): Yeah! The people in my head have a book and when I learn something they put it in the book!
Me: How do they get it out?
Reagan: They grab it and take it and put it into my mouth and put it into words!

(She said all this with such seriousness, I could hardly keep from LOL!)

...the mouths of babes!

Haven't done a Tiny Talk Tuesday in a while, but I finally wrote some down when I heard them this week.

*Reagan (5.5yo - after coming inside to change from swimming): "I'm not in the mood to be dressed!"

---------------------------------------------
*Jefferson (6.9 yo) while I was reading to him: "Pause it, Mommy! I have to potty!"

(Uhm, methinks we've a little too much movie time around this house?)
---------------------------------------------
*Reagan's prayer after listening to Fernando Ortega: "Beer Jesus -help me have a beautiful voice like that man - and not croaky! AAAmen."

(I guess my voice must be the croaky one around here!)

...the mouths of babes!

Okay so I missed TTT this week but I couldn't resist postin this!

Adam is about 2 1/2 years old but only just struggling to speak. We have a speach therapist coming to help up and have seen improvement! I was amazed last week when he put 3 words together at the dinner table!

Me: "We're having meat and corn! Do you want meat and corn? Meat and corn is soooo yummy! I wil give you some meat and corn!"
(overemphasizing and acting wildly excited .... about plain ol' meat and corn!)
Adam: "Meat ah core! Meat ah core!"
(smiling and exctied that he pleased Mommy by speaking!)

Fast forward to the next day. As most of you mommies know, corn doesn't digest even slightly in our babies. So I'm changing his muddy daiper and getting the chance to re-experience the corn - fun, fun! This is when Adam cracks me up.

Adam (looking down at his open, yucky daiper): "Meat ah core! Meat ah core!"

(I was ROFL folks!)

...the mouths of babes!

The kids have had much to say around here but it's been a while since I wrote a bit of it down!

Jefferson (6.5): "Mommy, somtimes I hear you say 'multitasking.' What's that mean?"

(Uh...it's just short for 'being a MOM!')

----------------------------------------------------------
Me: "I love Daddy, don't you?"
Reagan (5): "Then why don't you not yell at him?"

(Hmmmm... very, very, very good question. I don't do that which I should and do the things I shouldn't, huh? All eyes are on Mommy at all times...)

----------------------------------------------------------
Me or Daddy: "Adam! What does kitty say?"
Adam (2.5): "Voof, voof!" (with a sly little grin and giggle)
(He's not yet talking much at all and so we've been working on animals sounds. This has become his favorite joke and he's always so pleased to give us the wrong sound for the kitty!)

...the mouths of babes!

Here's what the kiddos had to say this week:
Jefferson is always interested in anything military these days. When watching "The Water Horse", a movie set during WWII, he sees an Allie plane fly past.

J: "What kind of plane is that?"
Me: "It's from the war back in 1942."
J: "What team is it on?"

(You mean ... the good guys who won the war?")

---------------------------------------------
When we were trying to get some probiotic powder down his throat:

J: "I'm never, ever, ever going to have it with honey again! You know what it makes it taste like - the after taste?"
Me: "No, what?"
J:"Like a tire or something!"

(I thought some one once said, "A spoonful of sugar.....?")

----------------------------------------------
Reagan (5): "Daddy, there's too many green beans....I want you to cut them!"
Jefferson (6.5): "But Rae! If you cut them, there will be more!"

(Ah, yes...looking out for the benefit of his sister. We wouldn't want too many green beans, now!)

...the mouths of babes!

Here's what we overheard at our house this past week:

Jefferson (6.5): "This goes as high as space!!"
(Now that's pretty high! I just love their imaginations!)

----------------------------------------------------
Reagan (5) at the dinner table while shaking her head back & forth: "I can feel my brain shakin' in my head Mommy!"
(Oh, goodness - I hope it's not loose! LOL!)

---------------------------------------------------
Jefferson (pretending to be a race car in a race and running around the house): "I'm goin' in for a pitstop!"
(Then he ran stright into the bathroom!)

...the mouths of babes!

Here's what the silly kids were saying this week:

Reagan (5): I can see both my pipes if I open my mouth!
(After a visit to the dr office where she observed a 3-D cross-section of the head that showed our "pipes")
---------------------------------------------------------
Jefferson (6.5): These are soooo good! (burgers)
Me: But they aren't very good for us at all, are they?
Jefferson: Then how do they make them taste soooo good?
(Good question - as I sit here chompin' on some not so tasty, yet very healthy carrot sticks!)
---------------------------------------------------------
Adam (2 and not yet talking): dedow...dedow (pointing to the yellow balloon)!!
Me: Yes that's yellow! (excited at having translated a new word)
Adam: dedow...dedow (pointing to the red balloon)!!
Me: Uhhhh... (totally clueless once again - he's not saying yellow)

Took quite a little bit to figure out that he DID want to know the color, which is why he pointed to each balloon separately, over and over until I got it. I'm hoping that he'll eventually be taking part in TTT!

...the mouths of babes!

In our house, any type of cream or lotion for healing (vasoline, daiper rash cream, Eucerin) is called "goopies." (If you're prone to blushing, just scroll on past!)

Jefferson comes to dh from our bedroom and says: "What's that goopies you have next to your bed?"
DH: "What? Where?"
J: "In the drawer that you don't use. By your side of the bed - it's always hidden there."
DH: "Uh.....that's just lotion - not for you!"

(Yikes! I guess we're going to have to get a little more clever about hiding our personal "goopies"!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

We've been watching Veggie Tales around here and have gotten the "If it Doesn't Have a Tail, It's Not a Monkey, It's an Ape" silly song from Larry in our heads for days!

Me: "Rae, you don't have a tail - you must be an ape!"
Reagan (5): "No, Mommy. I'm a kid!
Me: "How do you know?"
Reagan: "Because I have arms and legs!"

(Uh - what do you call the apendages on an ape?)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Overheard:
Reagan (5) to Adam (2) as he screams and throws a toy: "You're not making a very good choice!"

(So it's NOT just going in one ear and out the other!)

...the mouths of babes!

We stayed at a hotel one night this past weekend:
Jefferson (6): Daddy, why is it called 'Homewood Suites'?
DH: Because they want it to feel like home, I guess.
Jefferson: Well it doesn't. First of all, there's no nightlight. And when the lights are all out, there is still light that comes in and keeps me from sleeping!

(Hey, make up your mind kid - do you want light or not?)

...the mouths of babes!

I almost forgot it was Tuesday already! Here's what our little ones were saying this week:

As she observes Jefferson racing to get his schoolwork finished --
Reagan (4): "J, why are you going so fast?"
Jefferson (6): "Because I don't want to be here all day and I want to be able to play!"
(Hmmmm...I guess he IS hearing me when I tell him we need to get our work done efficiently so that we can have playtime later!)
---------------------------------------------------------------

In reference to our abundantly fat 4-month old Lincoln --
Reagan: "He spreads his chubbiness out!"
(Yeah - I guess fat does kind of 'spread'!)

...the mouths of babes!

Here's what our little ones had to say this week:

Me to a squirmy boy: "Stop hanging off the edge! Sit square in that chair!"
J (6): "Mom...my bum's not square!"

(So is this a case of smart alleck or just a kid that still takes things too literally?)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Recently Reagan has been coming over to me when Adam is asleep and Jefferson is busy and saying:

"Mom - I boring. Is there anything fun I can do? I'm really just boring."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
R (4 1/2) to her daddy: "You're a bear!"
Daddy: "Why am I a bear?"
R: "Because you're really big and you have big hair on your tummy!"

(Ohhhh the things they observe! You should see our bathroom - it does look like a bear lives there!)

...the mouths of babes!

I made dh a special treat (special because we aren't eating any sugar or white flour right now) for his birthday last week. A chocolate chip cookie pie - his favorite! The kids were excited about giving him something he loves.

Reagan (4): "Ohhhh, Daddy!! Mommy made you a pie! You are going to give Mommy tooooo much love!"
(Yes - dh hubby was pleased with THAT idea for sure! Hubba, hubba!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reagan - praying b4 eating her unattractive lunch options: "Dear Jesus, please get me out of this scratching so I don't have to be on this special diet anymore. AAAAmen!"
(I wish she weren't allergic to so many foods either! Strange to hear her use the word 'diet' at this age. I think that her friends at pre-k got to have ice cream today.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------
And Jefferson (6) wants to know what everything means these days!

J:" What does 'gel' mean?"
Me: "It's stuff that you put in your hair to hold the shape."
J:"No, I mean what does the word 'gel' mean? Daddy says that a trashcan is called "trashcan" because it is a can that holds trash. So what does 'gel' mean?"
Me: "Uhhhh...."

(Okay - we're only in 1st grade and he's already asking me things I can't answer!)

...the mouths of babes!

Reagan is sometimes in a world of her own! This week at the dinner table we had pizza. This is a treat around here and made her very happy.

R: "I have to sneak up on it and bite it!"
Me: "What?"
R: "The crust, Mommy. It doesn't want to be eaten. So I'm sneaking up on it!" (as she attacks it like a ravenous wolf - wouldn't want it to have a chance to run and hide!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
And yesterday I took Jefferson and Reagan to the Y to observe the karate class that Jefferson will be joining soon. The instructor came over to talk with us and asked her is she wanted to take karate.

R: "I already have some of this."
Mr. D: "You do? You do some karate already?"
R: "Yeah, I do my dance class on Mondays!"

(Oh, yeah -totally the same thing! She must have thought the boys were just dancing across the room - with a few grunts and yells and funny white dance clothes!)

...the mouths of babes!

Here we are at Tiny Talk Tuesday again and the kids have me laughing up a storm with their cute words!

Reagan is growling in frustration about something with which she is playing when I hear,
"I'll just deal with it!"
(Uh, I don't actually recall saying that to them so I'm not sure where this phrase came from!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jefferson: Mom, can I vacuum? Please?
Me: No, you may not!

Yes, this sounds crazy. I mean, what mom would say no to a kid asking to do a chore, right? But you've gotta know my son to get this. We just purchased a new cordless, lightweight vacuum to use for the daily pickup of kitchen crumbs. When something like this is new, it is considered almost the same in value as a toy to Jefferson. So all day he was running down the battery by vacuuming over an already clean floor. By dinnertime dh and I had had enough! But we did find the quote amusing!

...the mouths of babes!

Most families see a very defined difference between the first and second child, the first being kind of bossy with the second following his lead. But in our house we were blessed with a dominate first as well a bossy second one who can hold her own! So when they were 'racing' their vehicles around the house last evening it didn't surprise me at all to hear Reagan yell,

"Hey!! We can BOTH be the leaders! We can BOOOOTH be leaders!!"

Boy - there's no holding her back!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And again with the black grapes today:

Jefferson says at lunch,"Mommy, why do your cheeks taste wrinkly with these?"
Me,"Your cheeks taste 'wrinkly'?"
Jefferson,"Yeah, these grapes make them taste wrinkly. Why?"
Me,"The insides of you cheeks?"
Jefferson,"Yeah, they taste wrinkly all over when I eat these grapes!"

Uh....what does one say to that? :-) We're still working on descriptive words around here!

Out of the Mouths of Babes!

Jefferson had me rolling on the floor with laughter today. Out of the mouth of babes (or in this case, an adorable 6-year old) come the craziest things!

1. The kids were both folding laundry today when Jefferson held up a pair of my underwear and exclaimed loudly,"WOW! These are REALLY big ones!"
(hey, give me a break kid - I only just popped out my 4th kid 8 weeks ago!)

2. Jefferson,"These grapes taste like how your fingers taste when they get wrinkly in the water!"
(uh...is that a bad thing? anyone know how wrinkly fingers taste? just try black seedless grapes to find out!)

Be sure to visit Not Before 7 for more amusing "kid" talk on:
